5. Freshness signals

Recency indicators including dateModified, references to current events or data, and the cadence of surrounding content updates. Stale pages get filtered in favor of maintained ones.

6. Originality of frame

Whether the page contributes a named framework, original data, a documented methodology, or a defined term that doesn't exist elsewhere. This is the hardest to measure quantitatively and the most durable citation signal over time.

Topical depth and structured data coverage are the next tier. These determine whether a page survives the model's filtering when multiple candidate sources exist for the same query.

Freshness and originality of frame are the long-tail factors. They matter less for any individual page in isolation but matter enormously over time and at the site level. Originality of frame, in particular, is what separates a citable site from a forgettable one across six-month and twelve-month windows.

GEO score ranges

A standardized GEO score runs from 0 to 100. The practical ranges break down as follows.

0–39: Invisible. The page lacks the structural signals AI systems use to identify citable sources. Schema is missing or broken, content is written as prose argument rather than extractable claims, and entity attribution is weak. Citation in AI Overviews is nearly impossible.

40–59: Occasionally surfaces. The page has some signals working — usually basic schema and reasonable content structure — but is missing one or more of the major factors. Citations happen, but inconsistently.

60–79: Regularly cited. The page is structurally sound, entity-attributed, and sits inside a recognizable topical cluster. This is the working zone for most professional content. Citation behavior is reliable across multiple AI systems.

80–100: Citation-dominant. The page combines all six factors and contributes original frames the model has no alternative for. These pages get cited at high rates and are difficult to displace.

Most pages on most sites score in the 30–55 range. Moving a page from 45 to 70 is typically achievable in a single optimization pass. Moving it from 70 to 90 usually requires investing in original frames or methodologies — work that compounds but doesn't happen in an afternoon.

How a GEO score is different from a content score

Content audit tools have existed for years. Most measure readability, keyword usage, heading structure, and meta tag completeness. These are useful inputs but they're not GEO signals.
